An article in the Kansas City Star about the process of patenting products and services quoted Andrew Torrance, associate professor of law.

The Star wrote:

If a client decides to apply for a patent, the attorney then prepares and files a patent application and strives to make the inventor's rights as broad and strong as possible.

"To get to the starting line -- to file a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office -- can average between $10,000 and $15,000," said Andrew W. Torrance, patent attorney and associate professor of law at the University of Kansas.

...

Patent attorney fees are more affordable in the Kansas City area: a junior patent attorney charges less than $200 an hour and a senior patent attorney, $400 to $500 an hour, Torrance said.

...

Law firms often boast of the number of doctorate degrees among their patent staff or of scientists who have left industry or academia to practice patent law.

"To get a patent, your science has to be at the forefront, on the frontier of science or technology," Torrance said. "You need an attorney who understands new technology."
