KCTV5 quoted Raj Bhala, the Rice Distinguished Professor of Law, in their coverage on the death of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
KCTV5 wrote:
Raj Bhala is a professor of law at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He said Thursday's developments in Libya mean a lot for all people.
"What just happened today is that Libya overthrew. The people, with assistance from the international community, overthrew 40 years of tyranny, corruption, nepotism and bad management," explained Bhala.
Bhala's legal background is Islamic law and international trade law. He told Shaffe with Gadhafi's death comes a long road of rebuilding in Libya, but the strength of the country will be supported by opportunities to grow.
"Now they have an opportunity to join or rejoin the community of nations and the world economy and the world trading system and prosper," said Bhala.
He said one opportunity to benefit the Libyans could come from trading goods found in Kansas.
"From agriculture to aviation products and now we can do so more freely, openly and more transparently and not have to worry about what kind of regime we're dealing with," Bhala said of the possibility of trading goods.
Bhala said the future is where the Libyan people should be looking.
"(They can start) securing the country and establishing a new constitution and a system for choosing government officials, a system for running the economy and for guaranteeing individual liberties," he said.
