Law review symposium to explore opioid epidemic

Wednesday, September 12, 2018

LAWRENCE — Killing more than 115 Americans every day, the opioid epidemic has become one of our nation’s foremost health crises. This year’s Kansas Law Review Symposium will bring together scholars of varying backgrounds to explore legal issues and perspectives related to this epidemic.

“Addicted: Legal Perspectives on the Opioid Epidemic” will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at the University of Kansas School of Law in Green Hall. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Register and preview the complete schedule online.

“Our nation is in the midst of an unprecedented opioid epidemic, and the death toll keeps rising,” said Symposium Editor Erica Ash, a third-year KU Law student. “Now, more than ever, I think it is important that we talk about opioid addiction in this country to better understand the complex causes and begin to contemplate even more complex legal solutions.”

Speakers will include:

  • Micah Berman, associate professor of public health and law, Ohio State University
  • Kelly Dineen, assistant professor and director, Health Law Program, Creighton University
  • James Hodge Jr., professor of law, Arizona State University
  • Stacy Leeds, professor of law and vice chancellor for economic development, University of Arkansas
  • Stacey Tovino, Judge Jack and Lulu Lehman Professor of Law, University of Nevada Las Vegas
  • Elizabeth Weeks, associate dean for faculty development and J. Alton Hosch Professor of Law, University of Georgia

Scholarship associated with the symposium will be published in a spring 2019 issue of the Kansas Law Review. For more information, contact Ash at kulawrevsymposium@gmail.com.
