James Schmidt - Student Ambassador
3L | Houston, Texas | Kansas State University
Hi, y’all! My name is James Schmidt, and I am a second-year law student from Houston, Texas. I attended undergrad just down the road at Kansas State University and graduated in 2017 with a degree in journalism and mass communications.
After graduation, I went to Washington, D.C. and worked as a legislative staffer for Sen. Jerry Moran for two years before deciding to come to law school. I never thought seriously about coming to law school until I went to work in Washington, D.C. I worked with a couple of lawyers and greatly admired their way of thinking. That, coupled with my interest in public service, is what pushed me to go to law school.
As many of you will have done, I applied to law schools across the country. When deciding on a law school, I wanted to attend a school that challenged me academically, but also wasn’t so competitive that it was difficult to find good friends. KU Law has proven to be that place. Everyone is incredibly welcoming.
While law school is competitive, KU’s atmosphere is not as cutthroat as a lot of law schools across the country. The faculty at KU are incredibly helpful. If I ever have a question about something discussed in class, they are more than willing to take the time after class to talk through things further.
It can be stressful choosing a law school. If there is anything I can do to help you through this process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I certainly hope you will join us at KU Law and I encourage you to sign up for a tour of Green Hall.
