Hi, I am Heddy Pierce. I am a 1L originally from El Dorado, Kansas, though I’ve lived in Lawrence long enough to consider myself a hometown student. I graduated from the University of Kansas in 2019 with a major in women, gender, and sexuality studies and a minor in history. I began classes at KU Law as a summer starter, five days after my college graduation.
If you ask people who knew me when I was young, many of them would tell you that I have always wanted to be an attorney. When I began college in 2005, I thought differently and pursued an education in music. Eventually, I decided to enter into the workforce and was in retail management for eight years. I returned to KU to earn my bachelor’s degree in 2017 with a one-year old child. As I studied and ingested more academia, I knew that my calling was to advocate for marginalized and underrepresented communities. It was then I decided to pursue a legal education, so that my passion for advocating and making a difference connected in a meaningful way.
While I considered many law schools, I was continually impressed by KU Law. Every time I was at an event, all of the faculty seemed deeply invested in making a difference in students’ lives and the world. All of the students I met, even around town, were welcoming and willing to answer questions. Many of them cheered me on as I made my decision to attend KU.
The student ambassadors had a huge impact on my decision to go to KU Law. They assured me there would be students who had life experiences similar to mine. These same ambassadors helped me throughout the summer with any questions I had. I look forward to doing the same to future KU Law students. Please reach out to me with any questions or for any help you may need.
