Hi! Welcome to the University of Kansas School of Law. My name is Jöel Thompson, and I am a 3L from Fairfax, Virginia. After graduating with a double major in criminal justice and political science at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013, I worked in real estate law for three years before coming to law school.

My interest in law school began at a young age, as I have always been interested in the legal field. My proximity to the nation’s capital led me to an extensive interest in politics, which also influenced my decision to pursue law school. Upon graduating from VCU, I took a position at a foreclosure law firm in the D.C. area, where I gained valuable knowledge and experience. After about a year I transitioned to another real estate firm in the area and became a licensed title insurer in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

At my first law firm, I was fortunate enough to work for a KU Law alum, who introduced me to the school. I knew I wanted to attend a smaller, supportive community that would allow me to thrive. I also knew I wanted to eventually return to the D.C. area, so it was important to find a school with strong ties to other parts of the country. I found everything I wanted and more at KU Law. After visiting, I fell in love with Lawrence and I knew Green Hall was where I wanted to study law for the next three years. It became apparent to me that KU alumni are stationed throughout the country, especially D.C., and remain loyal to KU.

Being a nontraditional law student, I understand many of the concerns other nontraditional prospective KU Law students might be faced with. Also, having never lived in the Midwest, I can answer any questions or quell any concerns about living in an unfamiliar area.

Choosing a law school is a very important and stressful decision. There are many factors to take into account. Be sure to make the best choice for yourself. If you have any questions at all, feel free to reach out to me. I look forward to hearing from you!
