My name is Rayven Ouellette-Garcia, and I am a second-year student at the University of Kansas School of Law. I am originally from Tucson, Arizona, but attended high school and college in Gilbert, Arizona. I received an associate's degree from Mesa Community College and a bachelor’s in criminal justice and criminology with a minor in social welfare from Arizona State University.
My dream of becoming a lawyer started when I was a little girl. The moment that planted the seed in my mind occurred one day when I was watching "Law & Order" with my grandma. I remember her favorite character was Jack McCoy, and I would look at her and say, “Memaw, one day, I am going to be like Jack McCoy.” I am proud to say I am a few steps closer to making my dream a reality.
Before I started applying to law schools, I figured I would only apply to Arizona schools because I knew I wanted to practice there. But then I started to venture out and came across the University of Kansas School of Law. There was something different about KU Law that drew me in. I wanted to attend a great law school, but I also did not want to lose myself. I knew law school would be difficult wherever I went, so I wanted to find a place where I would become a better person while learning to be a great lawyer. I felt I would be able to accomplish that at KU Law. I got admitted, took a leap of faith and accepted KU Law’s offer.
When I first moved to Kansas, I was beyond nervous. I was about to jump into an unfamiliar environment. But moving to Kansas has been one of the best decisions I have made. I feel like I am becoming a great role model for my family, and I owe it to KU Law. I have been blessed to learn from outstanding professors and make amazing friends. I would not change my decision to attend KU Law for anything.
I know how overwhelming it can be to choose a law school. Don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have. I look forward to hearing from you! Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, KU!
