Biography —
Douglas R. Richmond is a senior vice president with the Lockton Companies, where he advises Lockton’s law firm clients on professional responsibility and liability issues. Before entering the insurance industry with another company in 2004, Richmond was a partner with Armstrong Teasdale LLP in Kansas City, Missouri. He tried more than 40 major cases to verdict as “first chair” and argued numerous appeals. He serves on the ABA’s Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Professional Liability and formerly served on the ABA’s Standing Committee on Ethics & Professional Responsibility. He chairs the Kansas Bar Association’s Professional Ethics Advisory Opinions Committee. Richmond is the lead author of Professional Responsibility in Litigation (3d ed. 2021), a co-author of Understanding Insurance Law (7th ed. 2025), a co-author of an insurance law casebook, Cases and Materials on Insurance Law (10th ed. 2025) and the lead editor of The Insurer’s Duty to Defend: Issues and Analysis (2024). He has published more than 100 articles on insurance law, the law of lawyering and various litigation-related subjects in university law reviews. Richmond earned his law degree from the University of Kansas and his bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska.
