Hi Y’all! I’m Maria Almirudis, a 1L from San Antonio, Texas. I graduated from the University of Kansas with a double major in Global and International Studies and East Asian Languages and Cultures with minors in Economics and Art History. During my undergrad, I completed two independent research projects, one on foreign investment in South Korea and another on how spaces are gendered in traditional Korean homes.
Becoming an attorney has always been something I had envisioned for myself. During my research as an undergrad, I found the area I was most interested in researching dealt heavily with the law. Which made my research nearly impossible because I lacked legal training but drove my ever-present desire to attend law school. My research interest was not the only driver to attend law school, as I watched my sister go through a lawsuit to receive compensation for a car accident that changed the course of her life, I knew this was the field I wanted to be in. Following that, watching my sister attend law school here at KU and loving every step of it confirmed my desire to attend law school.
When deciding where I wanted to go to law school, I knew KU Law was the only place for me. Not only was that informed by watching my sister go through law school here, but also because of the experience I had on my tour of the school and at admitted students' day. The students and faculty were so welcoming and honest, and I just knew this was the place I wanted to learn.
As a Latina first gen law student, I wanted to meet people who were like me in law school. The Student Ambassador program provided that for me by allowing me to connect with ambassadors who have similar life experiences as me. Hearing from them at KU Law was a place that welcomed and supported people like me really drove my decision to come to KU Law.
Deciding to go to law school and where to go to law school are two extremely difficult decisions, so feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
