Ben Helleloid - Student Ambassador

2L | Mitchell, South Dakota | University of South Dakota
Hi everyone! My name is Ben Helleloid, and I am a 2L from Mitchell, South Dakota. I graduated from the University of South Dakota in 2024 with a degree in business administration, completed my MBA the following year and then moved to Lawrence last fall to begin law school.
Because I decided to continue my education before entering the workforce, most of my professional experience comes from internships. Before beginning law school, I gained valuable experience as a legislative and financial intern for the City of Vermillion. I also spent a summer as a business banking intern, where I developed a strong understanding of the lending process from the ground up including UCC filings, credit checks and other aspects of commercial lending.
My decision to attend law school stemmed from one of my undergraduate professors, who taught both entry-level business courses and business law. I was fortunate enough to work closely with him, which gave me a better understanding of the many opportunities available to lawyers. This experience led me to explore law school further, prepare for the LSAT and ultimately apply to law school, with KU Law becoming my next stop.
During my first year, I found the professors, staff and students to be incredibly welcoming and encouraging. I truly feel that everyone at KU Law is committed to your success in everything they do. Law school can seem daunting, but as someone who comes from a family with no legal background I found the transition to be very smooth.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, watching football, golfing, hunting and doing just about anything outdoors. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the admissions staff or me!
