Ben Helleloid - Student Ambassador

1L | Mitchell, South Dakota | University of South Dakota
Hi everyone! My name is Ben Helleloid, and I am a 1L from Mitchell, South Dakota. I graduated from the University of South Dakota in 2024, majoring in business administration. I then graduated with my MBA the following year before moving to Lawrence this fall to begin law school.
Because I decided to continue with my education before entering the workforce, my only work experience comes from summer internships. In those internships, I gained experience as a legislative and financial intern for the City of Vermillion. I also spent a summer as a business banking intern, where I learned the lending process from the ground up, including UCC filings, credit checks and much more.
My decision to attend law school stemmed from one of my undergraduate professors, who taught entry-level business courses as well as business law. I was fortunate enough to work closely with him, where I gained a better understanding of all the opportunities lawyers have. This led me to dive deeper into law school, preparing for the LSAT, and ultimately applying, where I chose KU Law as my next stop.
While I have only been here a few short months, the staff and students have provided a very welcoming and encouraging environment. I truly feel that the staff is committed to your success in everything that they do. Law school can seem daunting, but coming from a family with no law background, I have found the transition to be very smooth.
Outside of school, I enjoy hunting, watching football, hanging out with my friends and family, and anything outdoors. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the admissions staff or me!
