Alec Hummel - Student Ambassador

1L | West Monroe, Louisiana | University of Louisiana at Monroe
I’m a first-year law student from West Monroe, Louisiana. I began my undergraduate studies in political science with plans to attend law school, but my path led me into the mental health field, where I became a licensed clinical therapist. Over five years of practice, I specialized in trauma, compulsive gambling and substance-use disorders. That experience reignited my interest in the law and strengthened my desire to become a more effective advocate for people in need.
My interest in KU Law began during a vacation to Kansas a few years ago. I traveled to Hutchinson to hunt upland game with friends from Missouri and unexpectedly fell in love with the state and the Midwest. When it came time to apply to law schools, I knew I wanted to live somewhere I could see myself long-term, and KU quickly rose to the top of my list. During my visit, I immediately felt KU Law’s challenging yet supportive atmosphere and simply felt like it was the right fit. My family also fell in love with Lawrence’s welcoming community, strong public schools, and the unique charm of a true college town.
One of the most rewarding parts of my KU experience has been the exceptional support from faculty and staff. I’ve spent hours in professors’ offices, some who weren’t even my instructors, asking about coursework, legal practice, and law school in general. I’ve consistently felt surrounded by a community genuinely invested in my success and growth, both personally and professionally.
Outside of school, I have an incredibly supportive wife, two wonderful children and three energetic dogs who keep life full and interesting. Balancing school and family can be challenging, but it’s absolutely manageable and deeply rewarding.
If you have any questions about moving across the country with a family, managing law school as a parent or anything else, please feel free to reach out. I’d love to share my experience and help however I can.
