Hi, my name is Karlie Bischoff! I am a 2L from the Kansas City, Missouri area. I graduated from Truman State University in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and minors in Spanish and disability studies. I originally aspired to be a special education teacher, but as I learned about the laws and policies affecting individuals with disabilities, I realized that I was most passionate about pursuing a career in law.
After graduating from Truman State, I served for 27 months as a Peace Corps volunteer with the Youth in Development program in Santa Apolonia, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. In Guatemala, I had the opportunity to work with adolescents and educators on topics such as sexual and reproductive health education, substance abuse prevention and leadership.
After returning from Guatemala, I moved to Topeka to begin a new role as communications and outreach director at the Disability Rights Center of Kansas. The opportunity to educate others on disability rights services and issues in Kansas as well as contribute to public policy research and advocacy efforts only confirmed my interest to pursue a public interest legal career.
One of the main reasons that I chose to attend KU is that I wanted to attend a law school that provides hands-on opportunities for students to gain practical experience. I additionally chose KU due to its great reputation and by how strongly the KU law alumni that I know spoke about it! Although I am still new to law school, I have felt overwhelmingly supported by both the students and faculty at KU. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
