Gâvvy Sanders - Student Ambassador

1L | Tyler, Texas | University of North Texas
Howdy folks! My name is Gâvvy Sanders, I’m a 1L from East Texas and West Louisiana! I attended the University of North Texas, where I graduated with bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Communication Studies (with emphasis in decolonial feminist studies). I came to Kansas to pursue a Juris Doctor degree and a Masters in Indigenous Studies.
I never wanted to come to law school! I was the first woman in my family to graduate high school, I am a first-generation college graduate, and I’ll be the first to get any degree past a bachelor’s degree. Law school, for me, was never the goal. Then, at the University of North Texas, I studied the impact that education has on disadvantaged groups of people and the amount of access and opportunities that higher education can present to disadvantaged and marginalized people. I came to law school to uplift students marginalized and historically excluded within the fields of education and the law; and I am interested specifically in Education Law!
I chose KU Law because of the sense of belonging the school exudes. Whoever you are and wherever you’ve been, there is a space for you here at KU Law. We also have a really strong faculty that’s dedicated to supporting students here, and I felt that so deeply at Admitted Students Weekend.
I came from out of the state and understand the anxieties that come with visiting a new place in a new state, so if you’re in town here are some places I recommend to get a feel of the Lawrence vibe:
- Visit Terrebones and then walk around Mass Street!
- Visit the Spencer Art Museum (free entry)!
- Check out a Drag Show at Lucia or Replay Lounge!
Please reach out if you have any questions!
