Hi! My name is Izzy Watkins, and I am a 2L from Overland Park, Kansas. I received my undergraduate degree in Spring of 2023 from the University of Arizona. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Law and a minor in Criminology.
I became interested in law school after I participated in the Center for Advanced Professional Studies Law program, a program my high school offered. I decided to attend the University of Arizona because of its unique undergraduate law program that gave me first-hand experience of the classes that you take in law school. I decided to come visit KU School of Law after meeting a KU representative at a law school fair in Arizona.
As a first-generation law student, I didn’t know what I was looking for in a law school. After visiting three different law schools I knew KU was the place I wanted to spend the next three years. I got to sit in on a class with Professor Velte during my tour and I loved how she taught and how the students interacted with each other. During my 1L year, I was lucky enough to get Professor Velte as my Torts professor. I am very happy with my decision to attend KU Law because of the environment and the people I am surrounded with. We are like one big family!
1L year can be hard to navigate for some people. For me, I didn’t know what type of law I was interested in. 1L year gave me a taste of all different types of law to help me learn what I might want to do in the future. I am currently interested in exploring the litigation route of the legal profession. It is important to know that it is okay if you don’t know what you want to do. Different people, opportunities and interest will find you along the way!
