Izzy Watkins - Student Ambassador

3L | Overland Park, Kansas | University of Arizona
Hi! My name is Izzy Watkins, and I’m a 3L from Overland Park, Kansas. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in law with a minor in criminology from the University of Arizona in the spring of 2023.
My interest in law began in high school through the Center for Advanced Professional Studies Law program, which introduced me to real-world legal concepts and careers. I chose to attend the University of Arizona because of its unique undergraduate law program, which gave me first-hand experience with courses similar to those taught in law school. I first learned about the KU School of Law after meeting a KU representative at a law school fair in Arizona, which inspired me to visit the campus.
As a first-generation law student, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was looking for in a law school. However, after visiting three schools, I knew KU was the right fit. During my visit, I had the chance to sit in on a class taught by Professor Velte, who made torts sound fun and engaging. I was fortunate to have Professor Velte as my Torts professor during my 1L year, and that experience reaffirmed that KU Law was the perfect choice for me. The community here truly feels like one big family.
Like many students, I started 1L year unsure of what area of law I wanted to pursue. The first-year curriculum gave me a broad introduction to different legal fields and helped me discover my interest in litigation. I now get to travel with the Mock Trial team, acting as an attorney. I’ve learned that it’s perfectly okay not to have everything figured out right away. Your interests, mentors, and opportunities will develop naturally along the way.
