Avery Amerio - Dean's Fellows

Avery Amerio is a 2L from Olathe, Kansas. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in political science.
At KU Law, she is involved in the in-house Moot Court competition, as well as the Sports Law Society and Women in Law. During her 1L spring, she was recognized with the Payne and Jones Lawyering Program Award for her superior oral advocacy skills.
Before law school, she did not have a formal legal internship and instead spent her gap year working as a server and bartender. This past summer, Amerio worked as a law clerk at Sloan Law Firm in Topeka, Kansas. At Sloan, a general practice firm, she gained exposure to a wide range of practice areas, including estate planning and probate, administrative law, employment law, and family law. The firm allowed clerks to tailor their workload, and she primarily sought out litigation-focused assignments, where she drafted answers, discovery requests, and various motions.
Outside of school, she enjoys crocheting, cooking, working out, and spending time with friends and family. She also volunteers at her high school’s speech and debate tournament twice a year, giving back to the community that helped shape her path to law.
Her biggest advice for 1Ls is that you can’t use someone else’s map to find your destination.
"Everyone learns at their own pace and in their own way, and it’s important to focus on what works best for you—not what works for those around you. The more energy you invest in building your skills, taking care of yourself, and doing what makes you happy, the more manageable law school will feel."
